FULL THATCH

Blanchard Thatching
A thatched roof that is well laid using the correct materials can last for many years.  The length of time a thatch last will depend on several factors.  Firstly the materials used.  As a rough guide a reed thatch can last up to 50 years, a combed wheat thatch around 20 to 40 years and a long straw thatch around 20 to 25 years.  With all these, the better the quality of the materials the longer the thatch will last.
Other factors that will affect the longevity of your thatch are the pitch of you roof; a steeper pitch will shed rainfall more effectively than a shallow pitch. Also, the location of your property, e.g. if it is exposed to the wind or surrounding trees.
A good level of maintenance will ensure you get the very best life out of your thatch.  If you are considering work to your thatched roof we can provide a full evaluation of your existing roof and advise you on the type of work that will be required.

BESPOKE RIDGES

Blanchard Thatching
Looking after the ridge of your thatch will protect your roof and extend the life of your thatch.  Replacing the ridge will involve the removal of any existing wire netting from the ridge, removing some or all of the old ridge back to a firm base and then re-making the ridge.  Any flashings around chimneys stacks will be carefully examined and any rectification work carried out to.  Often also at this stage the thatch will be dressed up or brushed down and then re-wired.
I am able to provide ornamental ridges, which can follow a traditional style or can be guided in a more contemporary manner to follow the layout of the roof, creating a bespoke flowing finish.
I would be pleased to come and chat to you about your ridge.

MAINTENANCE & REPAIRS

Blanchard Thatching
Maintaining your thatch can greatly prolong its working life.  Dealing with problem areas before they get out of hand will extend the life of your thatch and get the most out of your existing thatch.  I offer a full ridge maintenance service to keep your thatch sound avoiding the need to re-thatch early.

Dressing Up

Over time your thatch roof will gradually deteriorate.  The thatch becomes looser as the fixings slowly work out.  These can all be knocked back and resecured to the original fixings.

Brushing Down

This is where the looser material on the surface of the thatch – which can start to retain more moisture and hence reduce the life of the whole thatch is removed by “brushing down”.

Damage & Holes

Thatch can be damaged in many ways – by wind, flying objects, birds, extreme weather etc.  It is important that this damage is rectified and not left as that will start to affect the surrounding thatch and greatly reduce the life and integrity of the roof.  Generally, these repairs are very straightforward so long as there are no underlying issues with the roof.

Moss

If moss is becoming an issue with your thatch we can de-moss the thatch which will help extend it’s life further.
